A local move looks smaller than an international one, so people run it from memory. That is how utility balances, deposit evidence, deliveries, work outages and address-dependent records fall between the old and new homes.
Treat the move as a controlled migration of five systems: home, services, work, records and recovery access.
Decide what is actually changing
Mark each row:
| System | Same | Update | Close and replace |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lease / property access | |||
| Electricity, gas, water | |||
| Building/service account | |||
| Home internet | |||
| Mobile number | |||
| Bank correspondence/KYC facts | |||
| Employer/client records | |||
| IE/business contact records | |||
| Insurance/provider records | |||
| Clinic/pharmacy route | |||
| Deliveries/subscriptions | |||
| Emergency card and trusted contacts |
Do not update a government, bank, employer or insurer record simply because an internet checklist says every address is mandatory. Ask the institution whether your specific record must change and preserve its reply.
Overlap homes if failure would be expensive
A short overlap can buy time to test water, heat, internet, locks, noise, access and the commute before surrendering the old keys. Price the overlap against:
- emergency hotel/coworking if the new home fails;
- rushed mover/storage costs;
- inability to document old-home condition;
- missed work or appointments;
- temporary internet/data use;
- risk to deposit recovery.
Use the apartment comparison planner to compare full first-year and move-in cash, not only the new rent.
Open the new-home evidence trail first
Before moving possessions:
- verify signer/owner/authority and payment details;
- sign the lease and separate every payment purpose;
- inspect rooms and systems;
- photograph condition and inventory;
- record utility account identifiers, balances and meter readings;
- count keys, fobs and remotes;
- list repairs with owner and deadline;
- test internet installation feasibility and mobile fallback.
Use the lease and handover evidence checklist and create a rental handover record.
Close the old home symmetrically
Use the move-in record as the move-out agenda:
- restore only what the agreement requires;
- photograph every room from the same useful angles;
- capture final meters and latest balances;
- reconcile keys/fobs/remotes;
- record agreed damage or deduction with evidence;
- sign the handover and deposit calculation;
- preserve the bank/email/phone path for later refund;
- confirm which account or service remains in whose name.
Do not surrender all access before capturing condition and readings. Do not keep a key informally after a signed return.
Move services as separate projects
Internet
Ask whether the existing service can transfer, whether the new building is served, installation lead time, equipment ownership and the old-service close date. Test a mobile/work fallback before the old connection ends.
Utilities
Confirm whether responsibility follows the property account, named customer, lease or another arrangement. Record old final and new initial readings on the same day where possible.
The utilities and household accounts guide gives an account/meter/balance workflow. It avoids assuming every building or provider follows one pattern.
Deliveries and subscriptions
Change saved addresses carefully. Delete or label the old address only after active orders are delivered. Add building, entrance, floor and contact notes without exposing unnecessary access codes.
Protect the workday
For remote work, schedule the move around critical calls and deadlines. Prepare:
- charged laptop/phone/power banks;
- mobile data and second connection path;
- a tested quiet fallback workspace;
- offline copies of current work;
- authenticator recovery;
- client/employer notice if availability changes;
- one clearly marked box with work equipment and chargers.
Use the remote-work resilience guide rather than discovering the new building's failure modes during a live deadline.
Update people by consequence
Make three groups:
- Before move: movers, landlord, internet installer, employer if work is affected, building access contact.
- At handover: utilities/service contacts, trusted emergency contact, delivery accounts currently in use.
- After verification: bank, insurer, clinic, business/client and official records whose rules require an update.
For each update, record submission channel, date, reference and accepted evidence. A changed profile screen is not always proof that a regulated record changed.
Rebuild the local emergency layer
Update your printable emergency card with the exact new address, entrance instructions, trusted contact, medical note and 112. Test whether another person can locate the building from the written address.
Identify:
- nearest safe exit and meeting point;
- building manager/owner contact;
- 24-hour or late pharmacy route;
- clinic/urgent-care route appropriate to your plan;
- taxi pickup point;
- power/water/internet fallback;
- where spare keys are controlled.
Use a 14-day timeline
Seven or more days before
Book movers, document both homes, arrange service timing, measure furniture paths, pack records/medication/work gear separately and confirm payment method.
Day before
Charge devices, download records, confirm people and access, pack a first-night kit, photograph expensive items and protect liquids/fragile equipment.
Move day
Capture old final and new initial meters, complete handovers, test locks/water/hot water/power/internet, control keys and keep identity/medication with you.
First 72 hours
Test sleep/noise, commute, deliveries, waste, building entry, network and one difficult-weather route before buying many home-specific items.
By day 14
Close remaining old services, chase deposit/actions, finish required address updates and archive both evidence packs.
The move timeline planner can turn the move date and selected workflows into a portable checklist.
Definition of done
The move is closed when:
- old keys and accounts are reconciled;
- deposit status is evidenced;
- new lease, handover, meters and keys are documented;
- critical services and fallbacks work;
- required records have update references;
- work and medication continuity survived;
- both property evidence packs are backed up;
- no active order or payment still points blindly to the old home.
Changing address should improve a routine, not erase the records that made the previous one defensible.
