Packing for Georgia is not a contest to predict every future need. It is a risk-allocation problem: which missing item would be hard to replace, which bulky item is cheap to rebuy, which object creates customs or delivery friction, and which decision should wait until you know the exact home?
Start with a trial-stay kit and an evidence-backed inventory. Shipping the contents of your imagined apartment before renting the real one is how a move becomes expensive storage.
Use five destinations, not two piles
Give every item one destination:
- Carry: must survive the journey under your control.
- First suitcase: needed during the first two weeks.
- Buy after testing: common enough to source once you know dimensions and routine.
- Store with a release date: uncertain value, with a scheduled keep/sell/ship decision.
- Sell, donate or dispose: replacement cost is lower than transport, storage and attention.
“Ship later” is not a destination unless it has a named box, inventory, insured value, release condition and responsible person.
Score replacement risk
For each serious candidate, score these questions from 0 to 3:

High replacement difficulty, urgency and sentimental loss favor carrying. High size, border uncertainty and home dependency favor waiting. Do not add the numbers mechanically; use them to reveal the disagreement.
Carry the identity and recovery layer
Keep passports, critical originals, medication documents, essential devices, security keys and short-term payment fallbacks in controlled luggage. Split copies and recovery information so one lost bag does not remove both the asset and its backup.
Build the full pre-move document and data pack before packing objects. Photograph valuables and record serial numbers. Keep purchase evidence for unusually valuable equipment when customs or insurance questions are plausible.
Pack for the first address—not forever
Your first two weeks need a narrow operational kit:
- clothes for the actual arrival season plus one weather failure;
- medications and documented continuity plan;
- universal adapters and chargers that match device voltage requirements;
- one work setup that functions from temporary housing;
- basic sleep and hygiene items that survive a late arrival;
- small repair items you already know how to use;
- a paper arrival card with address, contact and 112;
- a day bag that keeps documents and electronics out of checked luggage.
Do not pack cookware, bedding, heaters or furniture for a home you have not measured. Temporary accommodation may already provide them; the long-term apartment may need different sizes or systems.
Buy locally only after a field test
“Available in Georgia” is not the same as “available in your exact specification, language, size and delivery window.” Before deciding to leave an essential item, test replacement:
- search at least three real sellers or providers;
- confirm the exact model/size/ingredient, not only the category;
- ask whether the item is physically in stock;
- price delivery, assembly, warranty and returns;
- save the listing date and contact;
- identify a second-best substitute.
For medical products, do not rely on retail search alone. Follow the medication continuity workflow and use generic names and clinician/pharmacist confirmation.
Electronics need a complete compatibility check
Check input voltage/frequency on the device or power supply, plug shape, warranty region, service availability, cellular bands/eSIM support, keyboard layout and whether a local account or SMS number is required.
A plug adapter does not convert voltage. High-power heating and kitchen devices deserve special skepticism because they are heavy, home-dependent and costly to use through the wrong converter.
For work gear, design two paths: the primary device and a recovery route for authentication, files and communication. The remote-work setup guide treats power, internet and workspace as a system.
Furniture is a measurement decision
Before buying or shipping furniture, record:
- entrance, elevator, stairwell and corridor clearances;
- door swing and narrowest turn;
- room, wall and ceiling dimensions;
- socket, plumbing, gas, vent and radiator positions;
- landlord permission for mounting or alteration;
- delivery floor and whether carrying/assembly is included;
- where packaging and removed furniture will go.
Add the real item to the household setup planner with delivery and assembly, not only shelf price.
Shipping needs a landed-process quote
Ask the carrier or forwarder for a written description of:
- pickup and final-delivery scope;
- chargeable-weight method;
- packing and prohibited-item rules;
- insurance limit, exclusions and claims evidence;
- customs documentation and who acts as declarant;
- duties, taxes, brokerage, storage and failed-delivery fees;
- delivery-address constraints and contact method;
- delay, inspection and return procedure.
Do not publish or rely on an unverified customs threshold. This site has a tested parcel-calculation build, but it remains out of public navigation and search until its Georgia thresholds and rates are confirmed with the Revenue Service.
Give storage a cost and an exit rule
Storage feels reversible, but monthly fees, insurance, access and another international move can exceed replacement cost.
Record each stored box, photo, contents, estimated value, access holder and decision date. Calculate 6-, 12- and 24-month storage plus one retrieval/shipping event. If no specific future home or use justifies that total, storage is postponement, not preservation.
The 48-hour packing audit
Two days before closing luggage:
- weigh every bag on the scale you will travel with;
- confirm airline dimensions and connection-specific rules;
- photograph open and closed luggage;
- remove batteries/liquids/items that violate the relevant carrier rule;
- place identity, medication and work recovery across safe locations;
- download tickets, addresses, maps and key records offline;
- confirm the person or service receiving any later shipment;
- write a list of the first five local purchases—then stop adding “just in case” objects.
A good move does not carry the most. It preserves the things that cannot be replaced and delays decisions that need local evidence.
